Electrically Operated Polarization Controller

Ottawa, ON - March 19, 2002

OZ Optics Limited, a world leading supplier of fiber optic products for existing and next-generation optical networks, introduces an Electrically Operated Polarization Controller (EPC) that provides continuous polarization control in a compact, easy to operate package.

The unit has four birefringence transducers, each controlled by a simple analog input signal, installed along a fiber at orthogonal orientations. The response speed of each transducer surpasses 100Hz. Insertion losses and return losses are near negligible, and the device can be operated from 1290nm to over 1620nm wavelengths. Applications include polarization controllers for optical networks, Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) control, Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) compensation modules, and polarization scramblers for polarization dependent loss (PDL) measurement systems.

Unlike designs with piezo-electric transducers, the OZ Optics design requires only ±5 Volt signals to control the unit. Safety concerns over high voltages are avoided because the OZ Optics design does not multiply the voltages internally. The redundant transducer design allows continuous control of polarization without having to "reset" the voltages. Contact OZ Optics for further specifications.
