Single/Multi Channel Inline Tap Couplers/Optical Power Monitors

DRAFT RELEASE - Version 1.0

Ottawa, Canada - September 23, 2002

OZ Optics Limited, a global supplier of fiber optic products for existing and next-generation optical networks, now offers a new series of inline optical power monitors and tap couplers. These taps can be made into either ordinary singlemode or alternatively polarization maintaining (PM) fibers. Using a new, patent pending process, these taps and monitors provide a way to easily measure the signal intensity through an optical fiber in a simple, miniature package. They are ideal for incorporation into optical amplifiers or DWDM systems for real time monitoring and feedback.

Inline taps are manufactured using a novel patent pending design that permits full automation, thus sharply reducing manufacturing costs. Devices can be made for as little as $10USD for 10,000 piece orders, not including photodetectors. Inline taps can be directly integrated into fiber pigtail assemblies, for packaging devices that rely on optical feedback. This allows the main device and the monitor photodiode to be packaged into a single housing, reducing both size and costs.

Optical power monitors combine the optical tap design with a photodiode in a single package. The device produces a current proportional the optical power within the fiber. The small size and simple interface makes it very easy to design into optical hardware. Power monitors will be available in single channel, and multiple channel configurations. Volume pricing as low as $30 per channel is offered for 10,000 piece orders. An inline power monitor with built-in display is under development. Contact OZ Optics for further details.
